Achieving that flush entry is what separates a real roll-in shower from a standard low-step unit — and it’s why this is a job for a contractor, not a drop-in kit.

- A generous opening — commonly referenced around 36 inches wide — for wheelchair access.
- Enough interior space to turn a chair and use a bench comfortably.

How the floor and drainage are built
The flush entry is the hard part, and it happens below the tile. To bring the shower floor level with the rest of the room, the floor framing usually has to be recessed or the surrounding floor built up. That’s structural work — the framing, subfloor, and waterproof membrane all have to be coordinated.
- Linear drains are popular for curbless showers because the floor can slope in a single direction toward a trench drain along one wall, instead of pitching to a center point. That single-plane slope is easier to roll across.
- A continuous waterproof membrane extends under the tile and up the walls, because a zero-threshold shower has no curb to contain water — the whole wet zone must be sealed.
- Slip-resistant tile or flooring is essential; a wet, flush floor is a slip hazard without proper texture.
Because so much of a roll-in shower is hidden work — framing, slope, membrane — cutting corners here causes leaks and failures later. This is the part of the project where doing it right the first time matters most.
Benches, controls, and fixtures
The build is only half the job; the fittings determine how usable the shower is day to day.
- A bench — fold-down or masonry — supports seated bathing and safer transfers. Position it where the handheld shower and controls are within easy reach.
- A handheld shower on a slide bar so it works seated or standing and adjusts to any height.
- Accessible controls placed toward the entry, within reach of the bench, so no one has to lean into the spray to turn it on.
- A curbless glass panel or no door at all, keeping the entry fully open. A simple weighted shower curtain often works better than a swinging door.
Grab bar basics: placement and mounting
Grab bars are the cheapest, highest-value safety upgrade in any bathroom — but only when they’re installed into solid backing. The most common failure is a bar screwed into drywall alone, which will pull out under real weight.
- Add blocking during the remodel. Before the tile goes on, install solid wood or plywood backing across the shower and toilet walls. This lets grab bars be mounted at any height, at any point, now or years later. It’s inexpensive during construction and disruptive to add afterward.
- Common placements: inside the shower (a vertical bar near the entry and a horizontal bar along the back or side wall), at the toilet, and near any transfer point.
- Commonly referenced heights put horizontal grab bars roughly 33 to 36 inches above the floor, adjusted to the user.
- Anchor to blocking or studs, never drywall anchors alone. A grab bar has to hold a falling person’s full weight.
- Choose bars that look intentional. Modern grab bars come as towel bars, shelves, and corner shelves so the room looks like a bathroom, not a hospital.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating a roll-in shower as a cosmetic swap. The slope, framing, and waterproofing are structural; a tub-to-shower conversion done as a surface job will leak.
- Skipping the blocking. Adding grab bars later means opening finished walls.
